Member of the month
What is your company/organization name?
I work for the City of Sacramento.
What is your title?
My title is Citywide Records Manager.
How many years have you been a member of the Greater Sacramento Chapter and ARMA?
I have been a member of the Greater Sacramento Chapter of ARMA since April of 2016.
How did you become interested in the records and information management industry?
I had a great boss and mentor that dragged me into the world of records and has encouraged me along the way.
What do you enjoy most about records management?
I love process improvement initiatives that enhance programs, create efficiencies, and increase transparency. Some of the projects that I have worked on during my career with the City include implementation of a citywide content management system, centralization of the public records act process, paperless process initiatives, open data, and a multitude of back-file projects.
What do you see as your challenges today?
I believe that the biggest challenge that Record’s Managers are facing today is the vast amount of uncategorized digital information. With the decrease in digital storage costs, the benefits of applying records management principles to digital information is often overlooked. This lack of structure can impede search and retrieval, retention, and litigation.
Is there an industry best practice or tip you would like to share?
As in most other areas, networking is essential to your success. Build strong relationships across the organization and foster relationships that allow you to both teach and learn from others.
What do you like most about being a member of ARMA?
I love the knowledge sharing and support that occurs amongst ARMA members. Becoming more involved in the Sacramento Chapter has provided me with access to other records professionals that I can share ideas with and learn from.
Outside of records management, do you have any hobbies or activities you love to do in your spare time?
Our family loves to camp and visit new places. We are year-round campers and plan a long road trip at least once year. We also backpack and travel to remote off-road locations.
